Region Code / Video Format FAQ

What is region coding?

Many DVD’s have a region code. A region code is a setting that companies use to make the disc only playable in the geographic region where the disc is released. When you buy a DVD player or video game console (e.g. PS2) it has a region code that corresponds to where you bought it. The region codes are as follows –

Region 1 U.S. & Canada
Region 2 Europe, Japan, South Africa, The Middle East
Region 3 Hong Kong, Korea, Taiwan, East Asia, Southeast Asia
Region 4 Australia, New Zealand, Central & South America
Region 5 Former Soviet Union, Indian Subcontinent & Africa
Region 6 China
Region 7 I don’t think this is in use yet
Region 8 Special International venues (airlines, cruise ships, etc.)

So if you buy an American DVD player, and try to play a DVD that is not Region 1 or all region (a disc without region code information), it will not work.

Some countries region code their discs more than others. For example, DVD’s from major American studios and Japan are almost always region coded. In Korea, over half of films used to be all regions, but as they have increased the sales of film rights to U.S. studios, their DVD’s are being region coded much more frequently. In Hong Kong however, the majority of DVD’s released are all region, so they will play in any DVD player, anywhere in the world.

So how can you watch a DVD from another region?

Well, if you have a regular DVD player you bought at a local store, you probably can’t. However some players can be hacked using a simple code punched in on your remote to convert it to another region. E-mail us with the make and model of your DVD player, and we can check for you. If there is not a hack for your player, all is not lost. There are multi-region, or all-region DVD players available, we sell some ourselves, that will play DVD’s from anywhere in the world. Some of those players will also convert video formats (see more of that below). We also sell a disc for the Playstation 2 that will allow it to play any region DVD, but the PS2 will not convert video format. I have heard that the Game Shark utility for the PS2 and for the X-Box will defeat region coding also, and I have also heard that the X-Box does convert video format. Finally, if you want to watch DVD’s on your PC, there are programs you can download that will allow you to watch any region DVD, and because computer monitors do not recognize video format, that wont be an issue for you.

What about video formats (NTSC/PAL)?

There are two major video formats used worldwide. One is NTSC and one is PAL . There is a 3rd video format, called SECAM, but it is not used for DVD’s that I’ve seen. Here are the differences –

PAL - PAL (Phase Alternating Line) is a video standard used in many countries around the world. Countries in Europe use PAL as their video standard, as well as Thailand. When a VHS, DVD or laserdisc is released using the PAL format it can have a maximum resolution up to 625 lines with a vertical frequency of 50Hz. There are different types of PAL standards, one of which uses a vertical frequency of 60Hz instead of 50Hz.

NTSC - NTSC (National Television System Committee) is another video standard used in many countries around the world. While it's not technically superior, it's more widely used thanks to its use in the United States and a variety of other countries, such as Japan. When a VHS, DVD or laserdisc is released using the NTSC format it can have a maximum resolution up to 525 lines with a vertical frequency of 60hz.

If you try to play a PAL DVD using an NTSC television, it will not work, even if your region coding is compatible. So how do you work around it? Well, a lot of multi region DVD players, including all the ones we sell, also convert the video signal, so you can watch any DVD, regardless of region code or video format. Also, computer screens do not use a video format at all, so it can play both PAL and NTSC DVD’s.
